Road Condition

Most roads in Tibet are newly built and black topped. The road between Khambala and Gyangtse are still closed for construction till date. According to our Tibet agent, this section of the road will re open from January 2008. Road construction is still going on between Milerepa cave and Zangmu.

If this section is still not open during the trip in 2008, we will use the old Friendship highway. In this case instead of spending the night in Nagarze we will stay at Rephung. The accommodation here is very basic. 4-6 bed in garage type room. The road between Milerepa cave and Zangmu are under heavy construction which means that it may affect the trip in 2008.

Due to this we can't spend the night at Nyalam as the vehicles are allowed to pass through this section only after 8 p.m. due to the construction. But the clients can still pass through being on mountain bike but the support vehicle will only join the group after 11 p.m. Because of this construction we will ride without support vehicle up to Zangmu. We must advise the clients to carry a pair of warm clothing for this section of the journey.

Accomodation

The tour includes hotels & basic guesthouses in Bed and Breakfast Basis.  In Lhasa, Gyantse and Shigatse, we will provide nice Hotels/guesthouses but in other places guesthouses are very simple Tibetan style dormitory rooms with 4-6 bed in one room.

Please advise clients that the bedding in the basic accommodation is not very clean so it is advisable for clients to bring their own sleeping bag. Washing and toilet facilities are outside and very basic.

Food

We get less choice in breakfast and dinner at most places because the restaurants and tea houses on the way are of the very basic standard. Mostly the menu will be potato rice, barley flour with butter tea and noodles.

In big cities like Lhasa, Gyangtse and Shigatse there is always fruits, chocolates and instant noodles, etc. available. So it is good to advise the clients to stock up. Also we can carry packed lunch while riding from the big cities.

Option

  • Hiring and taking a cook to prepare hot lunch and dinner will cost US$ 270 per person.
  • The other way is by collecting kitty money for the food by letting one of the clients or the trip leader to take charge in organizing for the food and water expenses.
